Dunesday flattens listless Iguanas, 4-2

Loss ends seven game unbeaten streak

Updated Tuesday July 12, 2016 by Eric Thompson.

After a one-week break for the 4th of July holiday, Iguanas took on Dunesday at Century College in what was technically a road game for Iguanas. And for the first 20 minutes of the game, it looked like Iguanas left their desire to play soccer at home.

In what had to be one of the quickest goals to start a game in MRSL this season, Dunesday scored less than a minute after kicking off thanks to Iguanas allowing a forward to waltz into the box unmarked. Just five minutes later it was 2-0 off another lazy marking effort. Thankfully Iguanas woke up from their slumber and started to make a game of it, but Dunesday would score yet again about 20 minutes in. One of their forwards looked to be blatantly offside but a defender on the far side of the field kept him on. Jason Radatz stopped the initial shot but Dunesday hammered home the rebound and it was 3-0 with over an hour left to play.

Iguanas could have just packed it in and decided that it wasn't their day, but they actually started to control the majority of the play toward the end of the first half. They relied less on long balls and actually possessed for small stretches and were rewarded with a goal just before the break. Paul Hamilton finished off a nice series of passes through the midfield with a perfect through ball for Doug Humphrey, who slid to beat the keeper to the ball and slotted the goal home. Halftime came with Iguanas down 3-1 but with a little momentum.

The second half was pretty evenly played, but once again poor marking cost Iguanas early on. A long throw-in crossed the face of the goal and found a poorly marked midfielder at the far post. All he had to do was tap it in with his head, and suddenly it was a three goal lead for Dunesday again.

Iguanas fought back and scored again around the 65th minute. Dalton Cristilly tapped an indirect free kick to Scott Hunter. Hunter found just enough space between the wall and the keeper to slot home his third goal of the season to make the score 4-2.

It looked like the Iguanas were poised to cut the deficit to one with about ten minutes remaining when Eric Thompson was taken down after a scramble in the box. Iguanas were rewarded a penalty kick. Thompson took a decent attempt toward the left side of the net but the Dunesday keeper guessed correctly and made a full stretch save to keep the score at 4-2. The last few minutes featured a couple good chances for each team but none of them found the net. The game ended as a 4-2 victory for Dunesday.

Iguanas' first loss since the season opener saw their record slip to 5-2-2 and dropped them from first to third in the Monday Division 2 table. The race for the playoffs with five game remaining will be intense--the top six teams in the division are separated by only five points. Iguanas will look to get back to their winning ways next week when they host Jogo Lento, a team they beat 4-3 in a wild affair back in May.
